Kansas Fall Turkey Hunting Offers Change of Pace

Fall turkey hunting is becoming increasingly popular. The season is long -- running Oct. 1-Dec. 2, Dec. 15-31, and Jan. 5-31, 2009. In addition, the fall season allows hunters to use dogs, much like upland game birds are hunted.

Kansas, Illinois Authorities Coorperate in Turkey Sting - Feb. 23, 2011
SPRINGFIELD, IL - A two-year, cooperative investigation among the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has resulted in the prosecution of 11 Effingham County, Illinois, men for violating multiple Kansas game laws. The case had been referred to Kansas by Illinois Conservation Police and the USFWS in 2009 after investigation of a case in Illinois revealed that the same people being investigated there were also illegally taking wild turkeys in Kansas. KDWP Law Enforcement Division investigator Doug Whiteaker assisted in the effort.

PRATT - While Kansas spring turkey permits are available to all hunters in most of the state, only 500 permits (residents only) will be issued for Unit 4, a western portion of the state bordered by highways I-70 on the north, U.S. 183 on the east, and U.S. 54 on the south.

2011 SPRING TURKEY PERMITS AVAILABLE ONLINE - Feb. 03, 2011
PRATT - The chill of winter clings to the Kansas landscape, but avid outdoorsmen and women are already preparing for spring turkey season, which runs April 1-12 for archery-only and youth/disabled hunters and April 13-May 31 for everyone. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks makes early preparation easier by offering spring turkey permits online in January.

UNIT 4 SPRING TURKEY APPLICATION DEADLINE FEB. 18 - Jan. 27, 2011
PRATT ? While Kansas spring turkey permits are available to all hunters in most of the state, only 500 permits (residents only) will be issued for Unit 4, a western portion of the state bordered by highways I-70 on the north, U.S. 183 on the east, and U.S. 54 on the south. Fifty percent of these permits are reserved for applicants who qualify as landowner/tenants in that unit. However, under regulations passed by the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission two years ago, resident youth (age 15 and younger) turkey permits are valid statewide, including Unit 4.

TIME RUNNING OUT FOR TURKEY PERMIT/TAG COMBO OFFER - Mar. 23, 2010
PRATT ? The 2010 spring turkey season runs April 14-May 31, and hunters looking for a bargain can find it in the turkey permit/game tag combination, available through March 30 at a reduced price. By purchasing the combination early, hunters save $7.50 over the cost of purchasing each separately after March 30.

GOVERNOR'S ONE-SHOT TURKEY HUNT APRIL 15-17 - Mar. 23, 2010
EL DORADO - The 24th annual Kansas Governor's One Shot Turkey Hunt will be held April 15-17 in El Dorado. Seventy-five hunters have committed to participate this year, including Kansas Governor Mark Parkinson and former Kansas governors Mike Hayden and Bill Graves. Seven youth, six from Kansas and one from Tennessee, will also be a part of the event.

YOUTH TURKEY HUNT NEAR COUNCIL GROVE APRIL 3 - Mar. 18, 2010
COUNCIL GROVE - The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) - in cooperation with area chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation and Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation, as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - is conducting a special turkey hunt April 3 near Council Grove. Youth must be age 11 through 16 to qualify. The event is part of KDWP's "Pass It On" program, designed to recruit young hunters.
