GOVERNOR'S ONE-SHOT TURKEY HUNT APRIL 15-17 - Mar. 23, 2010
EL DORADO - The 24th annual Kansas Governor's One Shot Turkey Hunt will be held April 15-17 in El Dorado. Seventy-five hunters have committed to participate this year, including Kansas Governor Mark Parkinson and former Kansas governors Mike Hayden and Bill Graves. Seven youth, six from Kansas and one from Tennessee, will also be a part of the event.

Youth turkey season opens Thursday, April 8, a week before the regular season. The youth turkey season runs from Thursday, April 8, through Wednesday, April 14, in game management units open to general season turkey hunting and open in controlled hunt areas to holders of a youth-only controlled hunt permit.

YOUTH TURKEY HUNT NEAR COUNCIL GROVE APRIL 3 - Mar. 18, 2010
COUNCIL GROVE - The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) - in cooperation with area chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation and Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation, as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - is conducting a special turkey hunt April 3 near Council Grove. Youth must be age 11 through 16 to qualify. The event is part of KDWP's "Pass It On" program, designed to recruit young hunters.

WESTAR ENERGY PLANS SPECIAL NOVICE TURKEY HUNTS - Mar. 17, 2010
PRATT - April 1-18, the Westar Energy Green Team will guide youth who have never harvested a turkey at its Jeffrey Energy Center, about 45 minutes northwest of Topeka. Assisted by experienced volunteer guides and hunting from stationary ground blinds, youngsters 12-17 years old will hunt accompanied by an adult mentor in prime fields closed to the public until the youth hunters are through. An adult mentor is required.

Hunters should temper expectations for this spring's turkey season after back-to-back years of dry conditions negatively impacted nesting success across much of Texas, resulting in fewer gobblers on the ground.

Bear, Deer, Turkey Harvest Data Announced - Feb. 23, 2010
Richmond, VA - Wildlife biologists with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) have compiled preliminary figures for deer, turkey, and bear harvests for the 2009-10 fall/winter hunting seasons. The white-tailed deer and wild turkey harvests were largely consistent with last year's harvest. As anticipated, the black bear harvest was up, but only slightly. These harvest figures indicate that good hunting is available across the Commonwealth.
